Challenge: How can we design sustainable interiors?
TypeResidential
Area400 sqm
LocationLebanon
StatusUnder Construction

The design strategy applied aims to transform the space into a Living Apartment that embodies characteristics of biophilic design. Natural features and processes are integrated in the design, thus demystifying the notion of sustainability and its application in indoor spaces.

Sub ServicesInterior Architecture, Materials, Landscaping, Furniture

The house attempts to perform like a healthy ecosystem with determined ecological performance standards, by applying several sustainable practices such as the use of sustainable materials, highly efficient mechanical systems with underfloor heating and cooling, domestic grey-water treatment plant, waste management system, recycling and composting, selection of native and beneficial plant species.

The aim is to design a home that gives back to the community, engages with neighbors and promotes healthy living. We are working on reducing the excessive use of natural resources and minimizing negative environmental impacts of conventional construction practices.

THE LIVING HOME IS:

NURTURING
- Beyond a conventional household
- Living and adaptive
- Creates conditions conducive for LIFE
PRODUCTIVE
- Connects back to Nature’s realm
- Natural elements strive to sustain healthy living
- The house sustains a symbiotic relationship with nature
SMART
- As resilient and generous as the Oak tree
- Withstands the test of time
- Supports life, birds, insects, and other living organisms
EDUCATIVE
- Provides a learning experience
- Advances the use of natural and technological products
- Fosters a more healthy and sustainable living experience

The landscape consists of native species only to attract local biodiversity. Urban pollinators and is set up for organic urban farming. It uses reclaimed gray water for drip irrigation to reduce water needs.

Reusing Tiles from Old Houses

The tiling patterns are integrated throughout the terrace and kids’ bedroom to create a maze connectng it to the master bedroom. The tiles were reclaimed from old Lebanese houses and used to preserve the cultural heritage in a contemporary setting

We decided to place abstracted natural patterns in the spaces that do not have direct visual connection to nature to promote a healthy response in the brain. The semi-regular non-uniform periodic pattern subtly recreates this connection to nature.
